Every Move you Make

I recently went to see Exposed exhibition at the Tate Modern with my lovely friend Tonga. The show is in it's final weeks, and I recommend that you go because it is really quite interesting. Most of the images were taken without the subjects knowledge or consent, and the show raises the question of whether this invasion of privacy and personal space is something inherent to photography. Am I the only one that thinks this invasion is super sexy?

The show made me think of these photos I just had developed from months ago. They are street portraits I took at my hip to finish a roll of film, and Exposed included many images that were pretty similar to my own. Oh, and that dude with the hand is Deaner...he doesn't like to be photographed. The show features work from art superstars like Sophie Calle and Bruce Nauman, as well as work from a war photographer named Ben Lowy, who I just so happened to have dinner with in Dubai last december.

Peep this Post to see photos from that trip...there is a lone one of Mr. Lowy and friend with pink palm trees in the dark.

Oh yes, and here are a few more Dubai photos I just found. Been on a mission to post lost photos, so stay tuned!

I am my own worst enemy

I am giving up drinking because of this...

2 Days, 2 Parties

More Virgo Birthdays! This time, it was Roro, and we actually managed to throw him a surprise party at my new flat. He CLAIMS he knew something was up, but he looked super duper terrified and pissed off when we screamed at him as he entered my flat. The party started out tame, as these things often do, and it ended in a cupcake fight in my kitchen.

After that, we went to Plastic Peoples where I danced my face off. The DJ was really good, so I decided I was in love with him. My idea of flirting was to write I LOVE YOU on a receipt in red lipstick and place it by his decks while he was spinning. To my surprise, this awesome move actually failed. Whatever, I think he was married...

After dancing came random house party, followed by me sleeping for many many hours. All in all, a successful 25th for RORO!

Sunday saw the arrival of my friends from Bristol, the band The Last Rogues. They played at The Dublin Castle in Camden, and after their set we decided to retire to my flat with wine, beer, vodka, and a shit load of Lilt. Joe, the singer and guitar player, was in possession of a luxurious head of long brown locks. According to the other members of the band, he looked like a girl. Therefore, we decided to give him a makeover. Thom Mason was art director, and I was in charge of creating the lovely zebra stripes. Personally, I think Joe looks simply stunning.

Two great nights, two awesome groups of people. Although, I am gonna lay off the parties for a while...the builders who came to do work on my flat on Monday and Tuesday actually asked me if I worked nights. If I did, that would explain the all day napping sessions I enjoyed this week. Can I now classify myself as a midnight hair stylist? Ya...midnight hair stylist it is....

Introducing Capstan String

On Saturday afternoon, as I wandered aimlessly through Broadway market, I happened upon my friend Geraldine Ryan's new performance gallery space called BitchWedge Gallery. Lucky for me, I was privy to an impromptu performance from Marc Vaulbert de Chantilly as one of his many alter egos...Capstan String.

Capstan is illiterate, incomprehensible and mentally ill. He did his thing, danced around, and was completely ignored by everyone at the market. It is quite remarkable how unfazed everyone was by him...are we this unimpressed and unsurprised by weirdos dressed in insane costumes? Or is it just that no one cares about performance art? I wished it had gone on for longer, to enhance the illusion that Capstan is a "real" person. The idea of Capstan is infinitely more interesting to me than a man dressed as Capstan.

Here is how he is described on his facebook page:

80s Acid Casualty. 90s Road Protester. Superhero. Anarcho-Squat Riotmonger, Urban Disorder And Disruption Legend. Often To Be Seen Behaving Inappropriately Around And About London's East End. Hates: Pigs. Loves: CHAOS!!! THE cApStAn RIDES TONIGHT!!!!

Mad Jack is Cool

Vbs.tv just made a full length documentary on the english filmmaker Jack Bond, a man that is TRULY a leg-end. Check out the trailer for the film.

Don't know about you, but I am super stoked to see the full length.

Oh ya, and here are some reasons why this man should be your hero.

The Pia Show

My lovely and talented mother will soon be gracing television screens across British Colombia with her new documentary series entitled, what else, "The Pia Show". This lady is smart, beautiful, funny, ditzy, and ALWAYS entertaining. Check out the show if you happen to live in that part of the world.

Oh ya, here is the press release:

PIA SHANDEL RETURNS TO TV
FRIDAY NIGHTS ON SHAW.

Local media veteran to premiere half-hour
series called P!a.

VANCOUVER, BC - September 24, 2010 - 10:30 pm marks the premiere of 'P!a', a new format interview/documentary series which will light up Friday nights on Shaw Channel 4. A provocative talk show host, political specialist, journalist, actress and seasoned television veteran, host Pia Shandel will present a personal and passionate side of local celebrities, revealing their true feelings on the issues of the day.

A trailblazer in the Vancouver arts and media community, Pia Shandel is returning to television with this new show. "It bothers me when celebrities are told not to speak out about issues, just stick to the script”, states Shandel. “The most perceptive, articulate and sensitive people I know are artists...and I, for one, want to know their take on the issues that affect us all."

Stars like Bif Naked, William Davis, Janet Wright, Joy Coghill, Leon Bibb, and Jackson Davies are joined by local Vancouver celebs like Bruce Allen, John Fluevog and Nikki Renshaw in a weekly tapestry of insight and colour on topics as varied as Being Black in Canada, Cruel Shoes, or B.C. Food Trends.

Expect the information to be powerful, the point of view personal and the perspective revealing.
For a touch of the absurd, the outrageously funny Patrick Maliha adds his over-the-top comedy to each episode with 'The Maliha Minute'. All set within a state-of the art virtual environment created by indie producer Go2 Productions Inc.

Catch Pia as she brings all her passion and experience to this exciting new television series 'P!a' , Friday nights at 10:30 pm on SHAW, Channel 4. Be a friend of the show on Facebook and follow Pia on Twitter

Something Good Happens, What What!

A while back I entered a film competition sponsored by Kopparberg Cider and Vice Magazine. It was called the Kopparberg Klash. And I totally won.

Here is my winning film.

The night was super fun, and my friends actually came! Yay Nick, Charlotte, Katia, Francesca, Helene, Alix, Tom Tom, Elly, Mikey, Joel, Zoe, Dan and Leo. Winning something is just so much more exciting with your loved ones around. That said, I was more relieved to not disappoint the people who had made the effort to support me than excited.

Winning something is always fun, especially when the prizes are money, exposure and a job.

Soon, I will be interning here

Apparently, my life ain't as shit as I thought it was.
